Guide of the Portuguese and geological and mine sites
The particular objective of the Guide of the Portuguese Geological and Mines Sites is to provide visibility to the set of initiatives which are already underway, and are of an institutional framework, significant in terms of size and characteristics, and related to geology and mining. The initiatives associated with the guide are recreational, cultural, educational, scientific, therapeutic, and include locations such as: abandoned or working mines; museums; curiosities, natural landscapes, R&D Centres, etc.
The creation of an online platform is the first step to provide these with a public dimension, for their evolution and to solidify the interesting potential that these represent; to support the visitor by providing a wealth of information supported by technology of increasingly generalised usage.
The information provided is the responsibility of the partners which manage each one of the different locations. The ongoing works also indicate the future creation of a “Network of the Portuguese Geological and Mines Sites” in seeking to exchange “best practices”; the qualification of the proposition; the development of joint activities covering diverse dominions (educational, informational, promotion of tourism, scientific, recreational, etc.); thus creating a sustained product for tourism within the concept of an “open museum.” Without a doubt the objective of the network comprises a vaster and more ambitious initiative.
Gypsum deposits in Southwestern Germany: A new exploration approach
In order to explore gypsum deposits in the Gipskeuper formation (Triassic) in Southern Germany, the Geological Survey of Baden-Württemberg (LGRB) performed an extensive exploration program. Detailed geological mapping and a few core drillings preceded a high-resolution geophysical survey with geoelectrical depth soundings. A new methodology for analysis of depth sounding curves allowed detection of target sulfate layers and prediction of thickness and depth. Finally, an intensive drilling program of the industry confirmed the geophysical results with considerable precision.
